Teens Support System

By Teresa Brouwer

When I was a teenager, I remember always being in my bedroom listening to music and reading Seventeen Magazines. I would polish my nails, write in my journal, and write letters to my friends. My room was my sanctuary, a place to be left alone and to have some down time.

My mother would always ask, “Tery, what’s the matter?” and I would always say, “nothing,” or “I don’t know.” The funny thing is that I really didn’t know. All I knew was that I had all these feelings and I didn’t know where they were coming from. I was happy one day and angry the next. My emotions were like a roller coaster and I didn’t know when the next bump was going to occur.

I had my own teenage problems. Arguments with friends, break ups with boyfriends, not doing well in school, a bully bothering me everyday before school started, and my hormones were flying around like a pack of wild birds.

Even though I had my share of problems, I didn’t need the support system that others may have needed. In my generation when teens felt that their parents were not cool, there was really no place to turn to.

Today there is so much out there for kids and teens today. When I was a kid, we didn’t have computers, the Internet, online support groups, and there weren’t as many support groups and organizations as there are now.

This column is a place where teens can visit to share their feelings, opinions, vent, and talk to other teens. This is a place where teens can receive feedback, advice, and participate in discussions. This is a place where teens can be themselves and receive the help they need.

Below are some support systems:
