What Every Teen Should Hear

By Teresa Brouwer

Raising teens is not easy, but sometimes we have to compromise and remember when we were teens ourselves. We all have our own ways of raising our kids and a lot of our choices and beliefs are based on religion, culture, and how we were raised.

The things that I love most about teenagers are their honesty and innocence. You can always count on a teen to express their feelings. They will let you know how they feel whether it is verbal or through a fashion statement.

Teenagers are a lot smarter than we think. They know what they want, but they need the reassurance that they are worth it. They need to believe that they can accomplish anything, they need to feel validated and loved.

The phrase, “sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never harm me,” is so untrue; names do hurt and they stay with us forever. What we tell our kids and how we treat them will shape who they are and stay with them for the rest of their lives.

What every teen should know and hear:

  • You’re Special
  • You’re Worth It
  • I Believe You
  • I Trust You
  • I Love You
  • I Am Proud Of You
  • You Can Accomplish Anything
  • You Are Smart
  • I Care About You
  • You Can Do It
  • You’re Strong
  • You‘re A Fighter
  • You’re Beautiful
  • You’re Awesome
  • You’re The Best
  • Great Job
  • I Knew You Could Do It
  • I Respect Your Beliefs
  • I Respect You
  • I Respect Your Decision
  • I Respect Your Opinion
  • I Respect Your Feelings
  • I Trust Your Judgement
  • It Is OK To Be Mad
  • It Is OK To Be Sad
  • It Is OK To Cry

Teens, like kids need to hear these words. Print out this article and always remember that words do leave a mark on our lives forever.
