Black or White: Does it Matter Anymore?

By Sara Jamison

When you see a person of another race walk past you, what do you do?

Chances are, you wouldn't notice. Or you may even give the person a friendly greeting, without really thinking about their race.

Most of us know how bad racism was about 50 years ago. We've all heard the stories about Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King. And we all know how rude and disrespectful whites were to the colored population.

In today's society, things have changed drastically. Blacks are now more accepted in the American society than ever before. Teens feel that color is not even significant.

Time-CNN arranged a poll on the topic of teenagers and racism. 89% of colored teens found racism to be no problem at all, or a very small one at that. Goes to show how times have changed and generations have adapted.

Here are what some teens had to say when I interviewed them about the subject:

  • "I think people are brought up to hate things they do not know," said Shayla, 16.
  • Supposedly the problem is non-existence in other places in the world. In a chat room, someone stated, "I'm from Europa - we don't have racism like in the US."

How do you feel about racism? How has it made a difference in the way you live? Post your message in the discussion board! I'm leaving the rest of this article up to you.
