Getting in Shape

Hi everyone! Had enough of Halloween yet? I have. Somehow, my sister and brother managed to talk me into walking around the neighborhood with them. (For the record, I’m fourteen, my sister is eighteen, and we didn’t collect candy. Unless they offered it to us. Hey, we weren’t stupid.) I’m glad to have the candy around the house again, but I’m really glad I won’t have to go through it again until next year.
Anyway, now that all of that is over, what are we going to be doing until the next major holiday? I know what my neighbors are doing… hanging a million lights in their front yard. (I just hope they don’t turn them on until at least thanksgiving. Who needs street lights when the house next door lights up the whole block?) Me? I’m working on my basketball. With basketball season coming up, I’ve got to get moving. (Not that I can play on a team or anything, but it’s nice to know I could make it.)
If any of you are also getting back in shape, (although it might be a little late for that if you want to play on a school team,) what are you doing? Jogging, weight lifting, yoga? There are a million ways to get in shape, but do most of them work? To tell you the truth, I don’t know. However, I do know of some ways to help you prepare for the season. Most of them are just basics, but I’m not an expert on training, so bare with me.
Jogging/walking. It’s probably the most common way of getting in shape, but I’ve seen for myself that it really does work. However, it’s probably the one way we all hate most. Who wants to jog around the block when it’s ten degrees outside? Not me, that’s for sure! I, for one, am always using the weather as an excuse not to go jogging. Either it’s too cold, hot, or wet. Besides that, I tend to find it somewhat embarrassing trying to jog around the block and not make it. (Ok, so maybe I couldn’t make it on a team.) How do we fix this little problem? Walking. If you walk at a fast pace around the block every day, eventually if you try jogging you won’t find it as hard. (It saves a lot of embarrassment on my part.)
Don’t want to leave the warmth/coolness of you home? There are plenty of ways to stay in shape without having to be in public. If you want to run, there’s always a treadmill. However, if you don’t have one and don’t want to spend that much money, try basic things like running in place, sit-ups, push-ups, and jumping jacks. Hey, if you have enough room, go get a jump rope. (I’ve recently decided I like jump roping. As far as I can tell it helps both your arms and legs at the same time.)
I’ve somewhat run out of time, so I’d better rap it up. If you have any good and simple suggestions, feel free to e-mail me with them at Starbird_Fan@Hotmail.com. I’ll see you all later!
