What's in a Name?
By Sara Jamison
What's in a name? A brand name, that is! Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Nike, Adidas, Ralph Lauren, and the list goes on. Why is it that we are all attracted to these "names?" Why are they so cool? Do we even know what they represent and advertise? This week, I'll tell you how top names like Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, Adidas, and others got their start and what they try to get across to teens around the world. So, ready to learn about the wonders of brand names, and the surprises behind them?
- NIKE -- This company sells any athletic clothing you could dream of. All of their items are posted with the world-known Swoosh. Where did that famous name "Nike" come from? Nike is the goddess of victory. The company used mythological characters to sell their products. Not bad. So now you're thinking, "Well, what the heck is the Swoosh? How does that relate to the goddess of victory?" The Swoosh is actually meant to represent the wing of Nike. Who woulda thunk?
- ADIDAS -- Starting in 1932, more than 800 world records have been set with this athletic footware, starting with Arthur Jonath. It all began with Adi Dassler's footware, and it all went off from there. Adidas obviously came from the man's name, and whether or not it was meant to spell "All Day I Dream About Soccer," I am not sure. I was unable to find how the logo all got started, so if you have any information about that, let me know and I will be glad to post it as a discussion!
- TOMMY HILFIGER -- Tommy wanted comfortable clothings for everyday wear. He believes that we're all-Americans and should dress that way. That's where the red, white, and blue colors come in. American colors for American people! That says it all, folks!
- REEBOK -- Reebok. A weird word once you think about it. Where exactly did it come from? Back in 1895, (yes, a long time ago!) a man named Joseph William Foster started out as a runner hoping for a pair of awesome running shoes. We all know the feeling. But with little money, he made some makeshift spiked shoes, perfect for what he needed. To make a long story short, his creation soon became a company, and after he passed away, his sons took over, renaming the company "Reebok," which is a small, fast running African gazelle. Now I'm sure you weren't expecting THAT!
So now comes the fun part - telling your friends what you know and they don't. Can't wait to see the looks on their faces at school tomorrow, can you? Grin.
