Teenage Gambling

By Sara Jamison

Teenagers are almost always strapped for cash. After buying clothes, CDs, cars, computers, and paying for weekend entertainment, our accounts can dry up in a matter of no time. In comes the temptation of gambling. Who says you have to flip burgers to make money? Just put a couple bucks into a bet on a card game and wah-lah, instant return and profit. Not always so.

Unfortunately, gambling is a game of risk -- a risk of losing your money, possessions, and even self-esteem. According to information compiled by the National Council on Problem Gambling, 63% of 16-year-olds gamble. That’s not even the legal age in most areas.

What are these teenagers gambling for? Money. A greedy view on “fast cash” and “getting rich quick” can lead to addiction in gambling. Teenagers enjoy the challenge, the excitement, and the profits sometimes returned in a card game or sports bet. But most don’t understand the limits. Most keep playing in hopes of making up their debts and returning their losses, only to find themselves in an even bigger problem.

With the onset of Internet casinos, this makes it even easier for teenagers to try their hands at gambling at an even younger age. With the number and expiration dates from a parent’s credit card, a high school or college-aged student can “test their abilities” with no limits. Or so they think.

Gambling is like drugs and alcohol -- addictive. Some people view gambling as a leisurely game and only participate in betting activities on a sporadic basis. But others can get caught up in the game and send themselves into a situation of trouble. There are ways to get help. Teenagers can read and view the online magazine Wanna Bet? or they can call for help at Gambler’s Anonymous at 1-800-266-1908.
