The Passing of the Keys

The Passing of the Keys

15. The wonderful number 15. This is the age where most teens receive their learner's permit. After fifteen years of waiting and that driving excitement building up, you finally get to sit in the driver's seat. What a feeling. But there are a lot of things a teen like yourself must think about before they put the pedal to the metal.

Teens are quoted by adults as irresponsible and immature drivers. Because driving takes a lot of responsibility and concentration, (and coordination, as I have found!) we are forced to think straight when a parent is watching our every move. But once that sixteenth birthday rolls around and we are rewarded with our own set of car keys, we seem to relax with our friends in the car with a tendency to goof around and have some fun, including showing off how fast our car can go. Not every parent wants to get a call from the local police station saying their child and his/her friends were in an accident.

This generation has gotten into a major jam. With accusations and assumptions, we have a lot to explain. Personally, I don't think many teens are aware of the value of life. If they make one slip up, it could cost them the chance to live. We have to be aware of the consequences of running a red light or taking turns without our blinker.

One internet site I found that was particularly interesting and informative was Ryan's Teen Driving page, located at http://www.ai.net/~ryanb/ . With information on what to do and what not to do while driving, this site will even tell you what you should do in case of bad weather along your drive. What do you do when you are getting tired and sleepy in the car? This site will tell you all you need to know about driving safely. I must say that Ryan did a great job on this website!

While cruising around on the internet on my free weekend, I found another site of interest to young drivers. New Drivers, at www.new-drivers.com, is full of information and tips, including how to get out of tough spots, how to battle the bad weather safely, and much more, all designed for the eyes of teens and young drivers.

In my town, the high school parking lots are a dangerous place to be. Often times they need to get police officers out there to keep an eye on the drivers. These days, some immature people can ruin driving for everybody. It's supposed to be relaxing, enjoyable, and convenient, not deadly and dangerous. Please drive safely everyone.
