Agony of De Feet

By Kelly Haugen

Spring is in the air and summer is just around the corner. It is the time of year when we start itching to kick off our shoes and tiptoe through the tulips. But, before you do this, you really should do some 'sole' searching first.

All winter long we pamper our hair, face, hands and nails. Even the elbows get attention, but, if there is one part of our body we neglect, it is the feet. We cover them with big comfy slippers, or worn and tattered socks. During the winter we tend to forget that we have 'soles'.

There is hope, and with proper care, you will feel good about baring your soles.

If your feet are looking a little rough around the edges, try a peppermint foot care routine. Peppermint will not only give you a surge of energy that will knock your socks off, but it will help relieve the pain (and itching) of De Feet.

Soothing Peppermint Foot Soak:

Soak feet for 15 to 20 minutes in a basin of warm water with a couple of drops of pure peppermint essential oil. Pat Dry.

Peppermint Foot Scrub:

  • 1/2 cup Cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoons Grapeseed Oil
  • 2-4 drops of pure Peppermint Essential Oil

Mix the ingredients to create your foot scrub. After soaking, smooth on the foot scrub and gently scrub off calluses and dry, dead skin using a pumice stone, loofah, or other abrasive sponge. Rinse with cool water and dry, including between the toes.

Finish this stage off by taking care of the toenails. Remember to cut the toenail across instead of around the edge to prevent ingrown nails. Lightly file the nails smooth with an emery board.

Peppermint Foot Cream:

  • 1/2 cup Aloe Vera Gel
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon Witch Hazel
  • 2-4 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil

Mix aloe, cornstarch and witch hazel in glass bowl. Microwave 1-2 minutes, stirring in 30-second intervals. Cook until mixture becomes clear and thick. Mix in the peppermint essential oil and store in an airtight container. Sooth on feet after using the foot scrub.

For tired legs try a soothing peppermint oil rub. Massage into legs and leave on during the time of your foot soak. It will help you fell refreshed and ready to go.

Peppermint & Grapeseed Oil Leg Rub:

  • 1/2 Cup Grapeseed Oil
  • 2-4 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil

Combine oils and massage into tired legs. Leave on while enjoying the foot soak. Pat dry when finished.

An Additional Foot Tip:

If you work out, apply Peppermint Foot Cream before exercise. Research shows the aroma of peppermint can help you work harder and faster, resulting in more calories burned during exercise.
